ATES (Aquifer Thermal Energy Systems)
ATES use the earth for the storage of energy. There are two methods:
Open wells (ATES)
With this system we use a well to extract groudwater from the earth and, after use, infiltrate it via another well back into the earth.
Closed wells (loops)
This also involves drilling, but rather then extract groundwater, ground heat exchangers are being placed in the borehole.
A big advantage of ATES is the possibility of storing and re-using big quantities of energy every season. This will result in a energy saving which can mount to 50% during heating and 90% duringcooling.
